MIT reports on its role in death of programmer, hacker Aaron Swartz
CAMBRIDGE, Mass., July 30 () -- A report released Tuesday by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology found the school made mistakes in the case of Aaron Swartz but denies wrongdoing.Swartz, a renowned programmer and technology activist, was arrested in 2011 after downloading more than 4 million scholarly articles from the subscription service JSTOR to offer public access to them. He committed suicide in January 2013, at age 26, while awaiting federal trial on charges of hacking into MIT's computer network. The 180-page report states: "MIT missed an opportunity to demonstrate the leadership that we pride ourselves on."His criminal case drew attention because the possible maximum sentence of more than 30 years suggested bullying by the prosecution and illustrated the disparity between punishment for high-tech crimes and other offenses,Christian Louboutin Pigalle, The New York Times reported Tuesday. In a letter to students,Christian Louboutin Black, faculty and staff, MIT President L. Rafael Reif said the report "makes clear that MIT did not 'target' Swartz, we did not seek federal prosecution, punishment or jail time and we did not oppose a plea bargain."
