About 10 percent of Russian doctoral theses copied content from others
MOSCOW, Sept. 4 () -- About 10 percent of doctoral theses on history defended in Russia since 2000 plagiarized about 70 percent of their text from other dissertations, a report says. The report comes from the Russian State Library, which gets copies of every dissertation defended in Russia, and recently began an examination of 14,500 relatively recent history dissertations on its shelves, RIA Novosti reported Wednesday. The investigation followed a scandal this year over reports of dozens of allegedly plagiarized dissertations in humanities, most of them by state officials. The scandal resulted in 11 doctorate holders being stripped of their title. The level of borrowing in the history dissertations means "these are bad works, with a very high degree of probability," library head Alexander Visly said. The problem is likely even worse because the study was limited to checking whether the dissertations drew text from other dissertations, he said."The amount of plagiarizing would have been much higher if we had also used other texts, such as monographs, articles [or] books for comparison," Visly said. Results of the check were forwarded to relevant state agencies, christian louboutin discount, he said.Theses in economics showed similar levels or plagiarism, he said, cheap christian louboutin shoes, although copying was less evident in research in hard sciences.
