By Stefán StefánssonWhile the weather conditions in Iceland mean that the island's 293,000 inhabitants can only play on proper pitches for four to five months a year, the north Atlantic island has none the less managed to nurture some great talents, not least among them Chelsea FC striker Eidur Gudjohnsen.Extreme weatherHowever, as green bay packers jerseys they aim to improve Iceland's footballing future, the local authorities have decided to defy the weather. Even though the northern parts of Iceland are inside the Arctic Circle, it is not temperatures that are football's greatest enemy in this part of the Nordic world but wind, rain and storms.Indoor pitchesWhat Icelandic football needed more than anything else was shelter, and in recent years, this problem has begun to be addressed, with full-sized indoor pitches being erected. And despite local doubts that they would never be financially viable, the sports halls have thrived.Five examplesThere are already five of them up and running: three are in the greater Reykjavik region, where 55 per cent of Icelanders live, with the others located in Keflavik and the northern town of Akureyri. Two further halls are planned in the towns of Akranes and Reydarfjördur.Important innovationIn the past, some had tried to play football during the winter in halls normally used for training horses. The new halls have been a vast improvement on that. Former Icelandic international and Hertha BSC Berlin captain, Eyjólfur Sverrisson sees them as an important innovation.'Huge impact'"These sports halls, where you can play during the winter, will a huge impact on football development," he told uefa.com. "It is important that so many young people will join up with the sports clubs and from those kids will come the future national players.Raising standards"The local authorities in Iceland building these sporthalls see it pays off," he added. "Such halls have been in Scandinavia for many years but a few years after they arrived you could see national teams improving. We are already organizing winter tournaments to extend the season."Mini-pitch projectHaving recently hung up his boots, Sverrisson is now taking responsibility for young players in a new role with the Football Association of Iceland (ISL). He is managing a project which, with UEFA's help, is encouraging the proliferation of minipitches to give children a place to play.School positionThe 20x40m pitches have artificial turf and under-floor heating, and with wooden sides, offer some shelter from the elements. Already there are 19 in Iceland, with 44 more planned this year - mostly near to schools. st. "We used to see basketball hoops at every school but during the school term the small asphalt football fields would be covered in snow.Positive action"We look at this as our part in giving kids the chance to start playing football younger and an encouragement to leading seattle seahawks jerseys a healthy lifestyle," he added. "We hope that as a result of this, more children will try football and eventually a mass of kids will come into the clubs."Long haulThe ISL are also working on improving coach training as part of their long term plan. It all looks very promising. "We are patient," said Sverrisson. "We know it will take five to ten years but that is all right. It takes time to build a future."
