Australian children are taking luxuries as a given,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]
Increasing wealth,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], cheap toys, gadgets and time-poor parents have produced an era of kids who often can't differentiate between need and greed,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], according to analysis in the Australian Institute of Family Studies.
Which means kids take for granted things that were considered once luxuries - like having a bedroom that belongs to them, their very own cell phone, a TV or computer in their room,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and achieving the latest gadgets for example iPods,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], iPads,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], PlayStations and Xboxes.
"Psychologists might have an increasing role in assisting parents and children to appreciate the difference between wants and needs,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," said Prof Alan Hayes, director from the AIFS.
Gross household disposable income per person in Australia increased 72 percent between 1998 and 2009, from $21,300 to $36,600.
But Prof Hayes warned the requirement to provide materials could be a trap.
"The more affluent parents become, the more likely are they to revise their material ambitions upwards," he explained inside a recent article in In Psych.
Jodie Benveniste, director of Parent Wellbeing,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], said it was vital that you teach children the value of money.
"Although buying stuff could be enjoyable, research has revealed that what's more beneficial is spending money on experiences like a family,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," she said.
The Mort folks are conscious of "affluenza". The Mort children - Georgia,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], 18,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Olivia,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], 16, and Samuel, 11 - have their own bedrooms, an in-ground trampoline and pool,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and their own computers.
Samuel has their own area within their Kew home for PlayStation and Wii,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
"It makes me a bit sick thinking about it all, but it's important to us the kids feel happy and safe," said their father Darren,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], 50, an attorney and actor.
He and the wife Anne, 50, work hard to instil good family values in their kids.
"We sit round the table and have a family dinner every evening. And we spend as much time together as a family, therefore the kids understand how lucky they are," he said.
