Britain facing a shortage of Jersey Royal potatoes after witnessing the driest spring in decades,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]
But because Jersey Royals are both trade-marked and covered by the EU's Protected designation of origin they cannot be grown elsewhere,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], meaning supermarkets cannot bolster supplies with foreign imports.
The crop is the island's largest export,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], which commands over £65 million worth of retail sales in the UK alone.
Tim ward,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych],[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], operations manager of Albert Bartlett,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych],[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], which represents 11 independent growers on Jersey,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych],[link widoczny dla zalogowanych],[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], said: 'I've heard from everyone that there has been at least a 20 to 30 per cent decrease because of the warm weather.
'This means our farmers are facing the very real possibility that they will be making a loss on their produce, which will be disastrous.'
It was initially thought the island could be in for a bumper crop after
warmer weather throughout January and February resulted in abnormal crop
bursts,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
The news is a second blow for islanders as last year's drought also devastated large areas of farmland,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych],[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], making harvesting and supply almost impossible throughout some periods of the season.
At £1.98 pence per pound weight Jersey Royals are living on a dying reputation of deliciousness. Over the last four years the taste has deteriorated to a mere shadow of the flavour they once had. It may be a protected brand but as I understand it,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych],[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the farmers are no longer permitted to manure their fields with seaweed and this has resulted in the lack of flavour experienced today. Many tasteless potatoes on the market especially from Israel,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Italy and Egypt early in the year and these are also a waste of money. New Lincolnshire potatoes are now available at a more economical price and they are full of flavour. Jersey Royals were only worth the price because of their unique full flavour which is now gone,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych],[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], so they are no longer worth the asking price. I have heard dozens of people say they won't buy them again,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych],[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], simply because there taste has gone.
I'm lucky enough to live in the "BLAND" Channel Islands where the potatoes are grown. Thanks for your comments GB,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych],[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Huddersfield!
I can't comment on the quality of the potatoes that find their way to the UK but can speak up for those that are bought locally and cooked within a couple of hours of coming out of the ground - they are delicious,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych],[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]!
I expect that if I purchased something that had been grown in Huddersfield and shipped to Jersey I may feel the same way as you do but I'm not sure I would write off the whole of Yorkshire because of it,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]!!
