Model Train Collectors Don't Always Operate Their Trains
Bill Murphy
Surprisingly there's a distinction between Model Train enthusiasts and Model Train collectors. A subtle one for sure, but a difference nonetheless! Collectors care more about owning and displaying tricky to find prototypes or components of value as opposed to the art of recreating a diorama or prototype themselves.
Pretty much every hobby you can imagine has collectors in it. They're the folks who drive up prices of old items like the very first edition of a famous novel. Most people do not understand the obsession,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but collectors certainly do.
Collectors would be the people who ultimately set values and the standards used to grade the equipment. They spend great intervals learning historical information about the different model trains and other model railroading equipment. They're a good thing for that hobby,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and in reality the majority of them aren't satisfied just displaying their equipment - they really run them on operational model railroad layouts.
Companies like Lionel Trains even go so far as to sponsor collectors' clubs for his or her past equipment. There are plenty of groups you are able to join if you're interested in learning more about the hobby.
One thing these groups do is create standards through which equipment could be rated. The equipment is usually rated separately in the packaging it came in,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], if the box is still intact,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and people who are still within the original box,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], never being removed, fetch the highest prices.
Grades For Model Train Equipment
* NEW - In original condition, probably never used or even taken off the package.
* LIKE NEW - This grade suggests that the model train is really as good as new, but may have been used and taken off its packaging in the past.
*EXCELLENT - Excellent condition means there isn't any rust, dirt or damage but that the item has definitely been used.
*VERY GOOD - This level suggests that slight wear but no damage or rust exists,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
* GOOD - There might be some slight scratches as well as normal wear but no rust.
* FAIR - Slightly damaged, worn and perhaps scratched but nonetheless quite usable.
* POOR - Suitable only for parts and possible no longer working,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
How Packaging Is Graded
* NEW - Original packaging filled with no damage or fading.
* LIKE NEW - May have a bit of wear but no major blemishes,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
* EXCELLENT - Like-original packaging with only moderate wear,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], no repairs.
* VERY GOOD - Might have some tears or damage possible non-original tape but complete.
* GOOD - Some elements might be missing, some wear and possibly even minor mildew damage.
* FAIR - Missing pieces, tears and discoloration are all likely.
* R - A non-original or replica.
Equipped with this information along with a healthy banking account you too can start collecting,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. Just pick a favorite theme or logo and dive in - keep in mind that in the world of collecting the customer sets the value there may be a difference between an assortment as well as an investment!
