Can slowing your lifestyle save you money
(Then we bought a new computer so I could keep focusing on my laptop while the family watches streaming internet,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], we cut costs, although not around I thought)
We did an excellent purge of "stuff" from the garage and closets a few summers ago because I wanted to simplify (some clothes, extra pans and pots, a coatrack, unused electronics) and now I'm seeing their replacements coming back in to the house as new purchases.
I guess my lesson is that you cannot make someone else simplify their life. I love my wife for trying so difficult that helped me to with my plan, and I certainly don't blame her for wanting a coat rack again (it is just who she is, she doesn't see the irony) however i should have considered how my desire impacted those around me.
I've seen various blogs (mostly from Penelope Trunk) refer to "optimizers" versus "settlers." The optimizers are the go-getters,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the ones always on the move, trying to optimize their time,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], their life, their experience, etc. They tend to be younger, on average,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], reside in bigger cities,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and on the whole, are usually less happy. The settlers are the type who be satisfied with what's, reside in smaller cities, and tend to be happier, albeit "less interesting".
Let's assume that your concept of "slowing down" describes moving away from that maximizer lifestyle, yes, I think you'll probably cut costs. Apparently it costs money to be unhappy! Heading out for meals everyday, going out with friends every evening, searching for the most recent whatever, buying the newest gizmo,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], trading up your car every Three years,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], traveling every other weekend to far-off places, making your lifetime "interesting" - these all cost,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and more than their opposites.
Take time to be pleased with that which you have - enjoy your comfortable and broken-in shoes,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], enjoy your paid-off car, enjoy some quiet alone time with a decent (library) book, appreciate the delicate tastes of the homecooked meal within the in-your-face greasebomb of restaurant food, take a walk,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], shut off the most recent Apple iDevice, and merely be. You'll save money,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], find calm, and feel refreshed.
*Apologies for waxing philosophical - though the connotations of "slowing down" kind of insist on it Smile.
Maybe it's a slightly different interpretation of "slowing down" that you're referring too, but selective procrastination can definitely help you save money. It's basically a technique for advertisement resistance: When I see some item which i want (but really have no need for), I simply procrastinate setting it up. This mostly involves just not actively going out and becoming it, awaiting it to go on sale (and then waiting for a much better sale), and merely generally being lazy about it. Basically still want to buy when I get around into it,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], then it is usually something that I consider worth its value. Usually though,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], following a month or two, I've forgotten about it altogether and managed to move on to the next thing.
This really is best in avoiding buying the latest tech gadgets and based on your gadget consumption can save you hundreds. I'm currently procrastinating buying an iPad until it either falls in price, a nice alternative turns up,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], or I choose that it's worth getting myself to an Apple Store - or I decide it's not well worth the hype altogether.
By simplifying my hobbies, I have more time for money-saving activities for example researching deals, creating an effective coupon-clipping system, and generating foods from scratch (which doubles as entertainment since I enjoy it). When I run frantically from activity to activity, I tend to mindlessly throw away more income, too. By living more intentionally, I think about my purchases more as well.
On the simplifying note, never underestimate the power of less stuff in terms of being able to fit into a smaller home. Leading to less space to heat and cool, which leads to savings. Everyone has their level of comfort with less,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], of course, plus some people love space. There are just trade-offs to more stuff.
