River rescue must remain a priority
Global warming is inherently difficult because it asks people, and their representatives, to brook big changes to avert what has not yet happened what is in effect, imaginary. Yet in Australian politics, it seems, even problems that are here, now, qualify for the toohard basket,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], deferred,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], delayed,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and denied.
Take Murray Darling Basin reform itself exacerbated by global warming but rooted in problems that well predate its emergence.
While the worst drought in a century has quickly faded for some, the problem of what to do about more than 100 years of overallocation and mismanagement remains.
In an encouraging development last week, Prime Minister Julia Gillard told The Advertiser the current reform process would not go off the rails. She assured South Australians she was good for her preelection promise of saving the system.
That her assurance was needed arose because of signs that the modest goal framed by John Howard and continued by Kevin Rudd and then Ms Gillard to lift basinwide management out of the mire of parochialism is in trouble.
When its Guide to the Draft Plan was released last year recommending 3000 to 4000 gigalitres be returned to the system to keep it alive,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], irrigators went into apoplexy.
And caught offguard, it appeared as if the Government went to water. Objective, peerreviewed science, intended as the basis for allocations, must now compete with socalled social and economic needs.
High hopes of a reprieve for the longsuffering river are yielding to fears the Government will duck a fight with independent MP Tony Windsor, whose electorate covers irrigators in the upper basin.
Rescuing this vital national treasure is not negotiable. The PM has given her word. She will be kept to it.
PLUG SOCIAL MEDIA LEAKS
THE explosion in electronic social networking and messaging continues to catch out people when they have not intended their innermost thoughts to enter the public domain.
AFL players now accused of "leaking" of usable information on the betting market via electronic messaging could at best be viewed as ignorant. In another era an AFL defender could boast to his mates that he would kick the first goal next weekend because he was starting at fullforward. These days it is betting research.
The AFL has spent countless dollars educating footballers on various aspects of their highprofile lives including racism, how to treat women and how to handle alcohol. Perhaps they need to spend some more time on how to deal with social media.

With World population to increase by 2.8 billion, one third,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], by 205060 and 25 million of that number every 3 months to our North surely, the MDB is a critical component of the food supply especially in nations that are losing food lands to population. Millions spent to cut irrigators to sustain an enviro flow when the prolonged drought produced no flow. Such brilliant strategy deserved the Silver Spoon with a Wooden Spoon to the NBN $36 billion for 24/7 TV.
