We already know burning Hermès bags is an unpopular activity. So we're a bit stunned to learn that Hermès itself has been engaging in a bit of fashion arson,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], torching its own products behind the scenes.
As Fashionista noted,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Mulberry's Emma Hill says Hermès disposes of any imperfect bags by burning them. Referring to the high standard of quality kept at the French company,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Hill told the Telegraph:
"A friend who was working at Hermès said that if there was even the most minor imperfection on a bag they would take it out the back and burn it -- no compromise,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]."
Be still our Birkin-loving hearts! We nearly had a heart attack seeing photographer Tyler Shields torch his girlfriend's red Hermes bag,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], not to mention Lady Gaga taking a Sharpie to hers. But the idea of Hermès incinerating its own leather beauties just makes us sad inside.
But the corporate policy may be par for the course,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], as a source also tell us that Alexander Wang may have done the same. Years ago,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], when tweaking the design of the trademark Rocco bag, the company decided to discontinue all versions without a shoulder strap,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], leaving hundreds of strapless Rocco bags sitting in the warehouse. Some were given to interns but others,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], sources say, were considered for burning. You'd be surprised how that could give them confidence. But burning perfectly good handbags is just wrong because someone, probably in a sweatshop,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], worked on that thing for long hours and very little pay. All for the sole purpose of some rich person to have bragging rights that they own a bag that costs more than most people's mortgages and cars and to buy Hermes executives another mansion and private jet.
Their clothing and scarf factories are in China. Their leather goods factories are in France. I looked this up,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but as a Hong Kong resident/Schenzhen shopper,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], I could probably have told you that. You can get top-quality knock-offs of their scarves and any kind of clothing with that little horse and carriage logo,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but only terribly clumsy fakes of the famous Birkin and Kelly bags. You CAN find great 'can't tell the difference' fakes of their wallets,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], however, which leads me to believe that some leather production may be here. Usually: The local knock-off artistes are capable of doing such exact replication only if the factories are in China. They can access the patterns and even use the real findings. My suspicion is that they are, or know someone who is working in the real factory and sneaking stuff out.
