Are Playboy Bunny Ears on Your Teen Christmas Wish List,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]

The 2012 Sears Wish Book has got some parents pretty upset. Alongside the familiar young teen brand names like Hello Kitty and Winnie the Pooh, Sears has apparently teamed up with Playboy and is now marketing Playboy Bunny-themed items to young teens. Cosmetics bags,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], lace-up sneakers,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], flannel sheets,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], hanging organizers,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and handbags are all glammed up with bunny bling and available for Christmas purchasing.
I am not protesting the existence of Playboy itself, but rather Sears' choice to add Playboy products to its Wish Book that is widely read by kids and families,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and considered by many to be a beloved holiday tradition. As blogger Helen Cleary-Escott wrote this week, "I completely believe that what consenting adults do is their own business, but I draw the line when a men's magazine that features nude women starts direct marketing to tween and teen girls." She points out the astuteness of Playboy's tactic - by dumbing down their product line, they will manage to desensitize and familiarize a whole new generation of young people with the company. I suppose the idea is to gain a broader readership and wannabe 'play bunnies' in the years to come.
In response,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Sears Canada's VP of corporate affairs and communications wrote that the logo is "arguably becoming more mainstream as time passes." Yes,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], that much is obvious if Sears is selling Playboy products in its Wish Book,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but that does not make it right. In fact, there is something inherently wrong with a young girl sporting a soft-core porn company's logo. For an older, sexually active person to wear the bunny ears is one thing,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but for a thirteen-year-old girl, it's degrading. She learns that guys want playboy bunnies,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], not intelligent, critical female thinkers. (I'm not suggesting that being sexy and smart have to be mutually exclusive things,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but being a 'bunny' is more objectification than sexiness.)
Cleary-Escott urges parents to reassess their own perspective: "If you saw a 14-year-old girl standing on the school playground when you dropped off your child and she was wearing sweatpants with Playboy written on the butt and a bunny bling bag over her shoulder,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], what would your first thoughts be? 'There's the girl I hope my son marries! Boy,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], I hope my daughter hangs out with her!'"
Sears should rethink what it's trying to sell, if its Wish Book hopes to remain a beloved family favourite. If adults want Playboy, they know where to go. Let's not inundate our teenage daughters with it,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], too.
