Soon,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the tremors moved into her leg, and Morgan's parents took her to the Stollery Children's Hospital in October 2006.
After undergoing countless steroid treatments,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], MRIs and other tests,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], she was diagnosed in April 2007 with a rare neurological disease known as Rasmussen's syndrome, which causes brain deterioration.
"This isn't a common illness, so there's not a lot of information out there to go on," said Darla Fischer, Morgan's mom.
After living with the disorder for two years, Morgan underwent surgery and had the left side of her brain removed -- the only viable treatment option available.
"They actually went in and removed the diseased areas,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," Fischer said.
Typically, the left hemisphere of the brain controls movement and feeling on the right side of the body, and vice versa. The brain's left side also usually controls language,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], math and logic skills, while the right side helps process auditory and visual imagery.
Because of her age, Morgan's brain was better able to adapt than an adult's would have been,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], said Ryan Sommer, an occupational therapist who worked with Morgan during the four months she spent as a Glenrose patient in 2009.
"What set Morgan apart is she was always motivated. She always wanted to try,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," Sommer said. "There was never that element of sadness or depression for her loss. It was more that optimism and enthusiasm for wanting to do things for herself."
Before she was diagnosed,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Morgan loved to swim, do taekwondo, and run around the playground with other kids.
After the surgery,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], she had to relearn even the most basic things.
Morgan said she was "scared and nervous" when she began her rehabilitation,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but with perseverance she learned how to walk, speak and eat on her own.
"Probably within the first week she was in a wheelchair and able to sit up well," Fischer said. "You could see the progress almost immediately."
Some functions, such as reading and writing,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], are coming along more slowly.
"It's amazing, but it's still a long way to go,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," Fischer said. "She used to be right-handed,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and she had to learn how to write again,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but with her left hand."
The brain is capable of incredible recovery, Sommer said, and Morgan's case is a testament to that.
"With Morgan, we're talking about the entire side of her brain," he said. "For her to be able to carry on and do most of the things she could do before is a pretty major achievement."
