Lauren is right on the button with Team USA's uniform

Before they hit the gym,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych],[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the track and the pool,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Team USA is making a pit-stop at prep school.
Designed by Ralph Lauren,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the uniforms for the 650 athletes marching in tonight's Olympics opening ceremony in Beijing are a crisp contrast to the short-sleeve jackets and shorts worn four years ago in Athens: tropical wool navy blazers emblazoned with oversized Polo ponies,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], off-white wool trousers,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], white cotton broadcloth shirts,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], white twill newsboy caps and striped silk neckwear ties for the men,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], scarves for the women.

The goal was to create "something simple enough for the athletes to put together,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych],[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], yet stylish enough to elevate us as a country,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych],[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," says David Lauren,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the designer's son and the company's senior vice president of advertising,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], marketing and corporate communications. Olympic Committee's chief operating officer. The image is "appropriately formal for the occasion. We want our young ambassadors in the best possible light as they step out onto the world stage." The USOC estimates that 4 billion people will watch TV coverage of the Games. "We are nervous,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych],[link widoczny dla zalogowanych],[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but we are more excited,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," says Lauren,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych],[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], who calls tonight's parade the company's "highest-profile moment" in its 41-year history. "It's our ultimate fashion show. "
Though the official design inspiration is the 1924 British Olympians movie Chariots of Fire,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych],[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Alex Badia,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], fashion director at menswear trade magazine DNR,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], sees a slightly different,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych],[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], more relevant reference: the great,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych],[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Gatsby age of American fashion. "You really associate Ralph Lauren with America at this point,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," he says. "They have drawn so much from American heritage that it represents the country."
Badia is happy to see Team USA follow,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych],[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], for instance,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych],[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Spain's lead and trade in its locker-room gear for something more sophisticated,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], more suited to the biennial rite than track suits. "I know that it's a sporting event,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," but for the opening ceremony "probably one of the best fashion runways ever" the teammates should be more dressed up, he says. "Nylon has never been a friend for parades."
First-time Olympian Andrew Campbell,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych],[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], 24,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], a sailor from San Diego,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], is "thankful" Lauren and the USOC decided to hark back to "a really clean-cut,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych],[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], classic American look" devoid of any "silly cowboy hats or berets." Having spent his private high school days in ties and slacks,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Campbell is accustomed to such polish. "With that USA team patch on your chest with those white rings underneath, it's a pretty powerful symbol,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," he says,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych],[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], referring to the blazer.
But not all the athletes are so comfortable with veritable country-club attire. Ergo,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych],[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], each competitor is receiving a pamphlet that details how to wear the clothes well from how to button a blazer to how to tie a tie to how to "walk and talk in them,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," says Lauren.
There are other challenges when it comes to turning out tailored clothing for everyone from gymnasts to basketball players. "It's not an easy task,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], fitting clothes on someone who's 5 feet tall or less and someone who's over 7 feet tall,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," Lauren says.
