'Powerful' Kilkenny will go down as one of greats but Kenny's cheap
"For hurling people, you can keep The Olympics and the bird's nest,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], this is our Olympics" -- Anthony Daly
Boy oh boy, was the former All-Ireland winning Clare captain correct when he uttered these words as Kilkenny and Cork wheeled around while watching stands before the toss in.
On an afternoon when Kilkenny hammer thrower Eileen O'Keeffe and Cork 100-metre hurdler Derval O'Rourke awaited updates on the injuries in Beijing,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], their respective hurlers showed little or no respect for his or her bodies at headquarters.
Kilkenny produced, arguably,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the most powerful 1 / 2 of hurling ever delivered onto the green sward of Croke Park when they absorbed Cork's energy and efficiency striking back with brutality and beauty.
Michael Duignan's rat-a-tat verbal volley at half-time was issued while excitedly glancing right and left across the studio, as if JJ Delaney or Noel Hickey could burst with the door to chase down his words.
There was no need,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. Duignan was fulsome in his praise of the "intensity" of the black and amber: "You can't see any way back for Cork".
And so it found pass,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. Kilkenny rolled right over Cork,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. It had been left to Cyril Farrell to paint a picture of artists at the office and the reality for that Rebels,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
"They need to realise. They'll realise. This can be a great,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], great Kilkenny team. They're going for that three-in-a-row.
"They're powerful ambassadors for hurling. They're strong. They're skilful. They have the subs. They have Brian Cody. We've had great Kilkenny teams. I have a feeling this could be the best of all," he concluded.
Wexford's Declan Ruth couldn't argue with this claim about the Sunday Game: "It pains me to say it. I must agree. Their rate of success is phenomenal. They'll go down as one of the greats".
The Cats can also be rated as the best of all time by September 7 if Brian Cody can motivate his players to duplicate their mind-blowing intensity allied for their organisation, skill and killer instinct.
"They're an amazing machine. Cork threw everything they had their way. It had been nearly like an All-Ireland final today. There was this type of buzz about this,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," enthused Pete Finnerty.
The same, there will surely be a follow-up towards the incident by which James 'Cha' Fitzpatrick was laid low with a cheap shot from Tom Kenny.
The hurling fraternity closed ranks as Finnerty stumbled via a defence from the accused. "What Tom did was wrong? But . it was just,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], an amount we are saying,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], unfortunate."
You can wince at the camera replay of Kenny's flick and also the poor choice of words by Finnerty,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
Tom Mulcahy was "not likely to hide from the issue. It was wrong. I am sure Tom Kenny would be the first man to put his hand up tonight and say it had been wrong,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
"I am certain that when the CCC or the DRA look at it, Tom will be the first to place his hand up and accept his punishment".
Kilkenny can relax and relax as Waterford and Tipperary start winning the dubious right to play in the All-Ireland final on the first Sunday in September.
Who will it's? "I'm still dodgy about Ken McGrath at fullback. But, I don't want people sticking pins in voodoo dolls of me in Waterford. I will choose them," conceded Finnerty.
Mulcahy didn't share his optimistic opinion of the Deise: "They aren't playing the way they have played over the last two or three years. I don't think they will do it,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
"I have to accept Tomas. Tipp have hurled with real purpose all seasons. I am going on their behalf," agreed Ruth,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], in a 2-against-1 split decision that may reflect how close it will be on Sunday.
