Resource boxes are incredibly important - this is the way you connect to your readers and provide them with information about you, your website, and your business. This is where you can promote your business and give your readers a reason to buy from you, visit your site or get in touch - and its importance often leaves people with questions about what is appropriate to include.
One of the questions I get asked often about resource boxes is this:
"I want to include my phone number in my resource box. Is there anything wrong with that?"
There are two parts to this question - firstly, whether or not it's against the rules,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and secondly, whether or not it's actually a good idea. So, first thing's first: no,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], technically, there are no rules against putting your phone number in the resource box. However, what I think most people really want to know is whether or not it's useful to provide a phone number in the resource box,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], to which the answer is: no, not really. And there are actually several reasons why.
Here are just some of the reasons you shouldn't include a phone number in your resource box.
1. The Internet is Forever
Our lives are changing all the time, but once your articles are out there - and your resource boxes - they can't be updated. This is why it's crucial to make sure that none of your information can become dated or inaccurate.
If you're honest with yourself,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], you can't guarantee that you'll have the same number in 5 years from now, and displaying inaccurate information will only harm the reputation of your business. Instead, put your phone number on your website, which is a central location you can update as and when it's necessary.
2. It's Confusing
If you give readers too many pieces of information at once,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], they likely won't act on any of them - meaning they won't visit your website or call you,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], if given the choice of both.
3. You're Providing Information
Here's a key point: although your articles are for the purpose of selling, the way you increase your sales is by giving your reader useful information - not pitching a product to them. If a reader is looking for information, chances are they don't want to call up and order a product from you straight away; instead, they want somewhere they can go to learn more,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], which is where your website comes in handy.
Unless you are using your number as another way for people to find out more information (for example, some charities do provide recorded information you can access by telephone), then your number isn't relevant at this stage: your website is.
4. You Should Be Building Backlinks
When it comes to online marketing,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the aim of the game is essentially to generate more traffic to your website,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], through backlinks which increase your pagerank and provide an opportunity for direct click-through traffic. You only have a limited amount of space in which to put this information,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], along with relevant statements about your business that would be useful if someone were to search for you online - so putting a phone number in is irrelevant to your main goal.
5. Less Personal Is Sometimes Better
People who prefer to find information by browsing the web often don't want the hassle of talking to people directly - instead, they want clear information that is of interest to them, and that they can access whenever and wherever they want. Unless you're running a 24-hour telephone line, the likelihood is that your phone number is a less convenient method of finding out about your business or niche, since it requires the reader to be available at the right time of day, to pay money for the call, and to make a personal connection with a stranger.
Things like FAQ pages have become popular in recent years because conducting your business online is far more user-friendly and convenient than calling up a person - so give your readers what they want, and stick to links.
There are a few people who might want to contact you by phone, but as long as you display this on your site as up-to-date,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], clear,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], accurate information, then there is no need for it to be present in your resource box.
Including your phone number in your resource box could be okay, depending on your objective, but generally speaking most of the time it is best to focus on the links.
