Adidas emancipates sneaker from its sales plan following slavery comments,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]
Adidas Originals/FacebookAdidas Originals posted this photo on its Facebook account,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but the company said it would no longer plan on selling the sneaker.
After photos had many crying foul,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Adidas scrubbed plans for a sneaker featuring a shackle-like ankle accessory.
As of tonight,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the image has received 38,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych],426 "likes" and over 9,000 shares. Still,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the critical comments came,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and fast. With the shackles,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], many saw an overt connection to slavery.
"Wow,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], no more Adidas for me. I wonder what Run DMC thinks of these,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," said one commenter,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], referencing the old-school rap group's habit of wearing Adidas sneakers.
". You would be an idiot not to see the racial/political connotations with these shoes,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," said another observer. "You may all think these are 'just shoes' but these are things you will walk around with everywhere,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], it will be a walking advertisement that you are just another slave in their eyes whether that means racially or financially."
Among the 4,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych],181 comments on the Facebook post are also many that defend the design,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], insisting there is no racism involved. Yet by Monday night Adidas said it wouldn't be bringing the shoe to market.
Scott told the Associated Press in an email that his true inspiration for the shoe was from a far more innocuous place than slavery.
"My work has always been inspired by cartoons,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], toys my childhood,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," the fashion designer said in the email.
More than a few people have made the connection between the sneaker's design and the orange-shackled,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], purple-mouthed My Pet Monster plush toy that debuted in the 1980s,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the character starring in both a video and cartoon series.
Scott's past designs for Adidas have included sneakers topped with Micky Mouse heads,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. His own runway designs have drawn inspiration from other cartoon classics including "The Flintstones."
