Computer Networking: Does OpenFlow basically centralise routing decisions,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]?
OpenFlow by itself doesn't centralize routing decisions or protocols. It an open standard for a "network controller" to speak with switches,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], which lets the controller program switch hardware. The centralization from the routing decisions can be the controller implementation. Think about OpenFlow in an effort to create a switch "programmable". It isn the only method,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], as with theory vendors could release REST based APIs to achieve switch programmability. The large advantage with OpenFlow is it an open standard and can be employed to control any switch that supports it. The drawback vis-a-vis any vendor-proprietary programmability scheme is precisely because OpenFlow should really use all switches,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], it can take advantages of specific hardware capabilities inside a given switch,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], which a vendor API could.
A controller can program on the switch while using OpenFlow protocol. Flows can match on fields like IP address, input ports and others. Actions include sending packets to specific ports,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], assigning Quality-of-Service parameters and sending packets to the controller through the controller interface towards the switch. In this way,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the controller can become conscious of new flows and take decisions on what to complete when it sees them.
OpenFlow started out like a great way to prototype ideas and features in a production network. Once an idea was proven to work,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], it might in theory be baked into the switching silicon and become implemented in hardware. That being said,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], as Open. (more)Loading.
