Former PM Comes Out In Favour Of Occupy Wall Street And 'Redistribution Programs'
"This idea that [the Occupy protestors] don't have clear goals, I don't think anybody buys it," Martin told The Huffington Post,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], even as city governments across Canada step up their efforts to end the occupation.
"These young people have touched a chord that is being discussed in every family across North America and in Europe, as well. I think it's a very important thing they've done."
Since Occupy Wall Street launched in New York two months ago, spreading like wildfire across the Western world, many public figures have come out in support of the protests against the growing gap between rich and poor. Most, however, have been celebrities, such as Gordon Lightfoot joining his daughter at Occupy Toronto and Anne Hathaway marching in yesterday's Day of Action in New York.
Martin who enacted controversial social service cuts during his time as Liberal finance minister from 1994 to 2002 says he's gone down to Occupy Montreal and spoken to the protestors personally.
"The fact is that the free market system works, but unless governments and people are constantly on the watch out for rampant inequality, unless they understand the need for redistribution programs, unless they understand the need to invest in education and better health care and a better environment," Martin said,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], "then effectively the free market system will fall on its own accord."
These are big statements from the politician who originally proposed the G20, an international organization which has been attracting mass protests since long before Occupy, and who is currently an advisor to the International Monetary Fund, another antiglobalization boogeyman.
"[The protestors] think globalization works against them; the fact is globalization is here. Our economies are more and more integrated. There's no doubt that when Greece fails or Italy fails the rest of us feel it," he said. "[But] for people to constantly put pressure on these institutions to deal more expeditiously with fairness and equality is a very good thing. I wouldn't throw these organizations out,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], I'd just make them work better."
Martin added that he considers Canada's bankers "enlightened" compared to their counterparts in the United States and Europe, whom he deems the real spark for the Occupy movement, especially considering their continued efforts to combat regulation despite the ongoing financial crisis.
"When you look at what's been said by some of the bankers in New York and Europe, you understand the absolute need for people to stand up and say, 'no, this is wrong, we're going to fight for our generation and for the generations to come.' "

You should have seen Paul Martin being broadcast LIVE with the Mexican President side by side several years ago as they went to a live feed to broadcast the world our country of Canadas commitment to the MILLENENIUM DEVELOPMENT goals. I have never felt prouder as a Canadian and felt this was a personally defining moment for me. Pauls extracurricular work and personal commitment to assist Canadian youth with his own free time, specifically in an area he knows well: business is also very admirable and commendable and inspiring for any one who feels such genuine articles for inspiration are lacking in the political climate we live in.
o finally,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], thank you, somebody says redistribution . . . the institutions of business and government that are structured to favor the top five percent (it's really more like five than one) need to start finding some ways to make adjustments and then use those the way corporations now brag about their environmental programs . . . it seems evident in every direction that this has to happen but that it can happen in a beneficial stabilizing way . . . let the smarter ceo cfo coo types show the way . . . it might less expensive than fighting it for the sake of control as the archaic fabric collapses . . . yes, i think it would be much less expensive to find some significant even token ways to "redistribute" the "wealth" and then brag about it in advertising and in congressional campaigns . . . of course, we know there would be some us lawmakers who cannot flex in this regard and they just need to be recalled and not elected again.
The fact is that the free market system works, but unless governments and people are constantly on the watch out for rampant inequality,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], unless they understand the need for redistribution programs, unless they understand the need to invest in education and better health care and a better environment," Martin said, "then effectively the free market system will fall on its own accord."
I think he is correct, but so far our government hasn't been on the watch! Maybe that's because special interest groups and lobbyists control Washington. And unfortunately the special interest groups and lobbyists are part of our free market system.
What a crock of crap! The incompetence of Huffpost Canada is truly astonishing. Here, they've gotten it completely wrong once again, this time with the help of Paul Martin.
Check this quote: "Martin says protesters have sparked a global debate that may help save the free market system."
Ha! Occupy Wall Street, Occupy Toronto,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Occupy anywhere, have never expressed any such desire to "save the free market system". The only desire i've ever heard from any of the occupy movement is to bring democracy to 99% mostly despite rampant and uncontrolled freemarket capitalism which obviously favours the 1%
In this article, Martin suggests that Canadian bankers are better (more enlightened) than the Americans when he knows very well that he, and most other Canadian politicians are puppets to the biggest Canadian Banks and their lobbyists in exactly the same way as American politicians are the puppets of Bank of America and Goldman Sachs.
Paul Martin is, in fact, one of the many politicians around the world that have backed the lowering of taxes for the wealthiest people and corporations, and I don't believe for a second that his views agree with the Occupy movement in any way. He is attempting to coopt a cause towards what he would like it to be.
