Adidas shoots for gold with NBA deal,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]
Sportswear giant Adidas announced a ground-breaking 11-year deal with the National Basketball Association to supply kit to all 30 of the American competition's teams,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
The multi-million pound deal will come into force when the 2006/2007 NBA season gets underway in the autumn and signifies the start of a global battle with market leaders Nike for dominance of the sports goods market,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
In January Adidas completed its takeover of rival sportswear manufacturer Reebok,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], a move designed to give the German company a much stronger foothold in the US.
The NBA deal now means that some of American sport's biggest celebrities,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], such as Kobe Bryant of the Los Angeles Lakers,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], will be wearing the famous three stripes of Adidas.
Announcing the deal in London,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Adidas president Erich Stamminger said: "Basketball is one of the two most important sports globally and if we want to be the leading sports brand in the world then we must lead in basketball.
"It will serve as a springboard for the further expansion of the business and brand not only in America but also globally,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]."
Mr Stamminger also outlined how this summer's World Cup finals in Germany will lead to a massive boost in revenue. Adidas predicts its sales in 2006 will easily exceed with more than 1.5m team jerseys sold,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], more than 1m licensed products and almost 2m pairs of football boots.
According to Adidas chairman Herbert Hainer,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the acquisition of Reebok,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], has put the company in prime position to take on Nike over the next three years.
