The play-offs to decide the final five places at Euro 2004 had one major shock in store. Following their 1-0 home victory over Turkey on Saturday, Latvia fought back from two goals down to clinch a 2-2 draw in Istanbul and book their tickets to Portugal. For the northern Europeans, the result means a first-ever participation at a European Championship. For Turkey, third-place finishers at the 2002 FIFA World Cup Korea/Japan™, failure to qualify for Euro 2004 is a bitter pill to swallow.
Latvia were joined by Holland (6-0 winners at home to Scotland), Spain (3-0 in Norway), Croatia (1-0 in Slovenia) and Russia (1-0 in Wales) at next summer’s tournament.
Besides hosts Portugal and reigning champions France, group winners Germany, Denmark, Czech Republic, Sweden, Greece, England, Bulgaria, Italy and Switzerland had already qualified directly for Euro 2004, which will be held http://www.theprytania.com/Prytania%20Menu.html in Portugal from 12 June to 4 July 2004.
Latvian delight
For Latvia there was jubilation – for Turkey there were tears. After Saturday’s 1-0 at home, a 2-2 draw in Istanbul against the third placed team at last year’s 2002 FIFA World Cup Korea/Japan™ means Latvia have qualified for the finals of a European Championship for the first time in their history..
For Wednesday night’s decisive encounter, Latvia welcomed back defenders Dzintars Zirnis and Mihails Zemlinskis from suspension, while Turkey were without suspended goalkeeper Rüstu Reçber and defenders Fatih Akyel and Emre Asik. The home team controlled the game from the outset and took a 20th minute lead through a fantastic Ilhan Mansiz volley. Latvia were then forced further and further back in the second half and conceded a second in the 64th minute, this time to Hakan Sükür.
At that point, the game seemed beyond the away team – but Latvia had other ideas! Just two minutes later, Jurijs Laizans scored from a direct free-kick to reduce the deficit to 1-2 and then Maris Verpakovskis, the goalscorer in the first leg, turned hero once again. His 78th minute equaliser meant that the game ended 2-2, and Latvia’s dream had become a reality.
”Oranjes“ take last chance in style
Holland vented their frustration from the 0-1 first-leg defeat in a spectacular 6-0 demolition of Scotland to cruise into the Euro 2004 finals in style.
The home side made a blistering start in the Amsterdam Arena, keeping Scotland pegged inside their own half, and that early pressure told as Rab Douglas was beaten in the 13th minute by a low Sneijder drive.
The dominant Dutch 2014 cheap world cup shirt increased their lead to 2-0 on the half hour as Sneijder turned supplier, whipping in a cross for Ooijers to head home. Ruud van Nistelrooy’s 37th minute header for 3-0 then effectively decided the contest. The Manchester United striker completed his hat-trick in the second half (51’, 67’), but not before Frank de Boer got in on the act with a 65th minute goal.
German coach Berti Vogts’ team were simply powerless to prevent the rampant Dutch from running away with the game, and Scottish hopes now turn to qualifying for the 2006 FIFA World Cup Germany™.
b>Croatia celebrate in Slovenia
A slender 1-0 victory in the return leg in Slovenia was enough to secure Croatia their place in the finals in Portugal. The first leg had seen the teams tied 1-1 in Zagreb.
Croatia took the game to their opponents from the kick-off, showing just how much it meant to them to be at Euro 2004. They squandered chance after chance in the first half, with Slovenia unable to create any goalscoring opportunities http://www.pixenaut.es/blog/ worthy of the name.
Croatia’s Juventus defender Igor Tudor was dismissed 15 minutes after the restart when he received a second yellow card for a foul on Amir Karic. Reduced to ten men, Croatia refused to be thrown off course and took the lead just two minutes later. Dado Pršo was put through by Sokota and steered the ball past Slovenian keeper Dabanovic for a deserved opener. Even then Croatia continued to press forward in an attempt to force the result, and although Slovenia did manage to respond with some pressure of their own in the final minutes, the away side held on to maintain their 100% record of qualifying for the European Championship.
Spain send out a signal
After a narrow 2-1 victory in the first leg, Spain put their qualification for Euro 2004 beyond doubt in the return leg in Oslo. Their 3-0 victory sent out a clear message to next summer’s opponents and secured their place in neighbouring Portugal.
Spanish coach Iñaki Sáez's made changes for the decider, bringing in César Martín for the suspended Carlos Marchena in defence and Juan Carlos Valerón for Fernando Torres in attack. Norway were without one of their most experienced players in the suspended Henning Berg.
Spain picked up where they left off on Saturday, using attack as the best form of defence. Raul finally opened the scoring for the visitors in the 34th minute, courtesy of a superb pass from Valerón. Vicente effectively decided the game just five minutes after the restart when he hammered in the second goal and Etxeberria’s 57th minute header set the seal on the matter – Spain are going to Portugal.
Russia slay Welsh dragons
After holding out for 0-0 http://www.nzweddingplanner.co.nz/media/28016/uBlogsyListarchive.html in the first leg, Welsh expectations were high ahead of the deciding return leg, but their dreams were shattered when Vadim Evseev put the visitors Russia ahead in the 22nd minute.
Coach Yarzev’s team were without suspended goalkeeper Sergei I. Ovchinnikov and midfielder Aleksandr Mostovoi in Cardiff’s Millennium Stadium but dominated nonetheless. Gusev’s free-kick into the area found Evseev, who headed into the net to score what proved to be the winning goal and claim the remaining place at next summers’ European showcase.
