In the game, the player is a captain of the Interplanetary Strategic Alliance (ISA), which is waging war against the Helghast Empire. The Helgast are a race of mutated humans who settled the planet of Helghast over a millennium ago. The mutations that they endured while on the planet have made them stronger and faster than their normal human counterparts, and an earlier betrayal by the UCN have given the Helghast a grudge they've carried for years.
