Early 80's questions
On September 17,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], 1981, the Chargers traded John Jefferson to Green Bay in exchange for the following: 1st and 2nd round picks in the '82 draft,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], a 1st in '83, and another #2 in '82 or '83 or '84, at the Chargers' option,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], plus a wideout named Aundra Thompson.
13 days later, the Charger acquired Wes Chandler from the Saint, sending Green Bay's 1st rounder in '82,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], a 3rd rounder in '82, and Aundra Thompson.
Fred Dean was traded to the 49ers two days after Chandler was acquired. The Chargers received the 9ers' '83 2nd rounder, plus the right to swap 1st round picks. (The Chargers did just that, allowing them to select Billy Ray Smith 5th overall in '83).

nice memory Forrest, we obviously got robbed on the dean trade ( a future hall of famer for a nice - not great player in BR ) but I think the Jefferson trade destroyed his career, he was never the same after he left San Diego. It was obvious to everybody when JJ was a Charger he was the best receiver in football. I didn't think it was possible to replace him, but for about a 2 year period there, Chandler was as dominant as JJ ever was. Especially the strike year, quite possibly the best year a WR ever had, over 1,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych],000 yards in 9 games (actually,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Ickey check this for me but i think Chandler actually missed a game that year so he had like 1,032? in 8 games, remarkable.
First of all, the team was on a skid when they were whipped by the Bengals in the regular season (the Chargers also lost to Seattle). Then the Bengals won under conditions where no team in the League could have beaten them -including the 49ers. Does that make them the better team? Were the Patriots the better team against the Dolphins in 1982 when Ron Meyer sent the snowplow into the deep snow to clear the spot for New England's kicker?
Second,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the next time the Chargers played the Bengals and there weren't 40mph winds to make Fouts' passes change direction in mid-air,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the Chargers hung 50 points on the Bengals. That was in 1982 and with the same teams, same coaches,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], same everything.
The point I was making is that at 13-3, the Chargers would have hosted the AFCCG,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], where Arctic weather is conspicuously absent. Klein's stinginess cost this team a Super Bowl berth.
