hoppin' and adunkin' on to your shelf
NBA's Greatest, John Hareas and John Havlicek, Dorling Kindersley ?26.10 If you're still recovering from last Sunday's Irish Basketball cup finals, you could do worst than pick up this large format photo-rich,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], jumpin',[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], hoppin',[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], dunkin' refresher course on the all time greatest hoopers. Mainstream stars recalled include rugby legends Tommy Kiernan,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Donal Linehan,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Stringer,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], O'Gara),[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Gaelic football legends like Billy Morgan, Eamonn Young,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Colin Corkery),[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], hurling maestros like Charlie and Gerald McCarthy, Paddy Barry,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Brian Corcoran and dual stars like Jack Lynch, Denis Coughlan, Jimmy Barry-Murphy, Brian Murphy and Dave Barry!
Dave was of course a Gaelic football and soccer dual star and indeed for me the most evocative photos and portraits are of the Cork soccer legends who graced The Box (Turner's Cross) and the wonderfully verdant Flower Lodge during the era of Celtic and Hibs. It was great to see Wiggie and Miah Dennehy's manes in action again. Given that the book is 485 pages long it is not surprising that the book does include arcane info on many soccer clubs other than The Town - teams like the Hungarian football team of the 30s,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the Finnish team of 90s, Albert Rovers,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Burnley, Fram FC (Iceland),[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], even the New York Americans and almost anybody who graced (or supported!) League of Ireland football over the last hundred years.
Of course the main focus is on Dundalk's evolution from early local pioneers of the 'dribbling code' such as GNR FC and Dundalk Rovers to its formal foundation by the multi-talented Dr JC Sellars (coroner,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], cricketer, golfer,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Olympian rifleman) to its development in Free State times under Bob Prole to its current revival under Enda McGuill. All the black and white maestros are recalled - from Turlie O'Connor to Big Jim to Richie Blackmore to Dermot Keely and key matches and off pitch developments meticulously chronicled. This is a wonderful example of sterling amateur research even if the writing is functional and flat. And at ?25 this book is as cheap as the proposed admission price to a home Drogheda match!
