It's back to school time
Maybe it was all the rain this summer,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but Mississauga students - at least some of them - can't wait to get back to school on Tuesday.
Not all parents,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], though,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], are as enthusiastic, grumbling at the thought of making lunches for their picky eaters,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and getting back into a more rigid routine at home.
"I'm excited to go back to school,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], seeing all my friends again," said Grade 3 student Joshua Gajewski,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], who was back-to-school shopping Tuesday (Aug. 26) at Square One. "I'm looking forward to getting back to studying math and science, my favourite subjects."
Katrina Gajewski is happy for her son,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but wishes lunches pleased him as much. "He's a picky eater,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], so the lunch thing, that's the hard part,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," she said.
Some 241,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych],000 public and Catholic school students in Mississauga will head back to classes next week.
Amira Ahmed was beside herself at the thought of heading to school for the first time. She's going into junior kindergarten at St. Jude Elementary School,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and made a trip to the mall with her dad, Shakur,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], to pick out her "first-day-of-school clothes." Her outfit includes fancy gold shoes and a new headband.
"I think it's fantastic," said Shakur Ahmed. "She's finally going to learn her alphabet and numbers and we're both happy and excited about it."
He said he's not apprehensive about her taking a bus to school or being away from home each morning.
Back to school also means more children walking and biking on roads and sidewalks. Younger children often have limited experience and lack the skills to safely negotiate traffic,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Peel Regional Police say.
Police are implementing a back-to-school traffic enforcement program,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], beginning the first day of classes,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], in which they're beefing up their ranks in school areas to put the brakes on speedy drivers and those who don't obey flashing lights on school buses.
Meanwhile, neither the Dufferin-Peel Catholic nor Peel district school boards have plans to open new schools this fall in Mississauga. Declining enrollment province-wide has forced boards to consider closing or combining schools rather than build new facilities.
