Sub Pop Records and Mudhoney are both celebrating their 20th anniversaries this year,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the label and the band that have survived the grunge explosion and prevailed. Was there ever a musical movement so deliberately dumb,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], leaden and juvenile as grunge? Retro rather than revolutionary; it was adult infantilism at its worst,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Beavis and Butthead but serious. Grown men in shorts, T shirts,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], sneakers,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], flannel shirts and velcro, waving their locks around like a cross between The Muppets and a Status Quo pre-school tribute band! The drums were primitive clubs hammering the beat into submission, the guitars over-amped Iommi wannabes, while the singers were all anguished no-show-biz microphone-clutching low brows (yes Eddie Vedder I'm looking at you) bellowing their year 10 "lyrics",[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], no verse choruses in sight, into the cacophony. Contributing little of enduring worth, K Tel would be hard pressed to put out a 20 greatest grunge hits compilation; it was all sound and fury signifying nothing, the high school-dropout stoners' brief moment of ascendancy before OD-ing, dying, breaking-up, fading away, telling unimpressed people at parties that you once played bass for Alice In Chains and seeking therapy for alcohol, drugs and tinnitus. Most of the culprits have fallen by the wayside. Nirvana the only one leaving an enduring legacy.
At the same time, Sub Pop have released a remastered and expanded version of their 20 year debut EP, Superfuzz Bigmuff ,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], dedicated to their favourite distortion pedals that are unleashed into the distorted exuberant teen rock band playing in their parent's garage sound.
Back in the day,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], primitive geniuses like Link Wray, Pete Townshend and Dave Davies deliberating damaged their speakers by poking holes in them in order to get the distorted guitar sound that they wanted. In the early 70s the Super Fuzz and Big Muff effects pedals enabled the guitarist to switch on the distortion at the tip of toe, when combined with feedback, it was a devastating sound squall that sounded like exciting danger. Pure electricity.
Agree with the others, far too harsh on what grunge meant as a cultural movement and as a musical genre in the early 90s. There was a lot of great music that came out of that era other and even though I love Nirvana as much as the next person, there's more to grunge than Kurt co. Pearl Jam is still going strong after nearly 20 years (even if they are now something approaching the Grateful Dead of my generation!), Alice In Chains have reformed (although it's not really the same without Layne Staley out front but respect to the guys for keeping the music alive), Mudhoney as you rightly said never really went away and have been wonderful for nearly all of the last 20 years, Dinosaur Jr, etc etc.
More importantly, grunge came along at a time when the music scene in general was pretty bleak - pre-Britpop, all there seemed to be was hair metal and manufactured pop muzak. Grunge was the kick and the injection of attitude that was much needed at that time, much like what punk was back in the mid/late 70s. It also brought the idea of bands - guitars, bass, drums - back to the fore and showed that you didn't need to be technically proficient to make great music. My favourite genres of music.
Agree with "thetummybugs",[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Hotcakes is a great distortion pedal (if your one of the lucky few to get one, they are as rare as hens teeth).
