Cam Levins racking up huge mileage and big results
The storyline arc was already rare enough. Plucked in the obscurity of small-town Bc, Levins earned a scholarship to tiny Southern Utah University and handle seventh in the 5,000 metres at the NCAA Division I championships. By the end of his junior year he'd operate a mile in under four minutes. He'd been named a first-team all-American. He was a pretty impressive athlete.
But Levins wasn't particularly impressed with some of it. Within the final laps of this 5,000m championship race, for example,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], he had struggled maintain. While superior runners were kicking,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], he had flagged. He was puzzled.
For some time he considered the chance he simply wasn't as tough because the young men who'd defeated him. Then a teammate suggested another possibility: That his rivals had simply arrived at the race in better shape.
"I was like,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], 'In order to operate with these guys, I will need to get my strength and endurance even that one level higher,'" Levins said. "I was like, 'I've got to try something.'"
An amazing year later,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Levins' efforts convey more than paid off. Earlier this year he won both the 5,000m and the 10,000m in the NCAA championships, becoming just the 11th man in history to achieve that rare double. Throughout an aspiration senior collegiate season, he also ran the second-fastest 10,000m race in Canadian history while experienceing this required time standard to represent his country at the London Olympics both in the five,000m and the 10,000m.
So long as he finishes in the top three in Friday night's 5,000m final here at the national Olympic trials,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], he'll be en route to London in both events. Earlier this week Athletics Canada granted Levins,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], 23, a bye from the 10,000m race in the trials.
Exactly how he's achieved his stunning results has become the stuff of track-and-field legend. Levins said in an interview he has spent most of the past year running between 150 and 160 miles a week - a legendary workload that continues to raise eyebrows even among world-class marathoners.
"When I just read he averaged 155 miles per week, I personally didn't accept is as true in the beginning,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," said Reid Coolsaet, among Canada's Olympic-bound marathoners, speaking over the telephone from his Guelph training base. "Some people,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], once they saw he was running 155 miles, they thought, 'Oh,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], he must have meant kilometres. Because,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], honestly,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], 155 km a week,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], that's close to 100 miles. And that is probably, on average, such a fourth-year or fifth-year guy within the NCAA would be running."
Coolsaet said he averages about 210 km per week (about 131 miles). His most voluminous 7 days see him run about 240 km (about 150 miles).
Levins, who said he'd previously run about 120 to 130 miles a week,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], continues to be sworn to secrecy about the particulars of his training regime by his college coach, Eric Houle.
"We're doing a bit of things here that I know would raise eyebrows," said Houle. "On top of increasing mileage, there's other things we're doing. Cam's promised me he's not going to discuss the stuff. Why, all of a sudden,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], can Cam, in the last lap of the race, leave these all-Americans behind as though they're standing still? I am talking about, it's more than just distance training. It's going outside the box in a lot of facets of training. I really understand this may not use another athlete again. However i know this: It worked with Cam."
While Levins has thrilled track enthusiasts with a speedy finishing kick - he concluded his Olympic-standard-breaking run in a 10,000m race in April with a 55-second final lap - his beginnings were not even close to prodigious. The collegian so adept about the bell lap would be a high-school fader.
"He'd lead the race completely, after which within the last 200 metres,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], everybody would pass him," said Gus Levins, Cam's father.
If Cam had a defining characteristic growing up, perhaps it was his penchant for constant motion. Cam's aunt Lois once joked that, like a toddler, he needed a leash. His mother, Barb, who clerical operate in the health-care field, laughed about her youngest son's boundless energy.
"He never walked as a kid, and he wouldn't wish to ride the bike - he'd rather run," said Barb, standing trackside in Calgary on Thursday.
Chimed in Gus: "I wasted some cash on bikes."
Certainly the Levins engrained in Cam and the older brother Jordan the significance of a hardy work ethic. This is the first summer in several that Cam isn't working alongside Gus at Gus's lawn-care business, employment that for years saw Cam mow 50-some lawns a week between his morning and evening runs.
"Cam said to me,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], 'Dad, this is exactly why I'm running within the Olympics. So I don't have to (cut grass) anymore,'" said Gus Levins.
A part-time job is no longer essential; Levins recently signed a sponsorship deal with Nike that accompany a pay packet and large boxes of free shoes and apparel. If he's a little bit impressed with what he's accomplished, certainly he and the confidants see bigger things ahead.
"My hope is, through what Cam has been doing, that maybe we might change distance training in this country and in Canada," said Houle. "The last 35 years,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], 4 decades, we have been focused about rest than we now have about training. It's, 'We've reached rest. After you run 10,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych],000m you've got to take two weeks off.' Well, I believe in rest, but sometimes you've got to wake up. You've got to work."
Levins, for his part,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], sees East Africa's world-dominating distance runners because the standard, not as unassailable. Last year, maybe he might have been convinced otherwise. But a large number of miles down a distance runner's hard road, his horizons have broadened with his workload - and thus, too, has his self-belief.
"I hear a lot about how, 'Oh,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], (the Kenyans) are just born better.' You hear that many. But I do not believe it and that i will not accept that's what it's," Levins said. "I mean, there is a million other reasons why we're not in a position to contend with them - or haven't competed with them previously. . I believe I have a chance to run with one of these guys, whether now or three or four years down the road. It does not matter. Personally i think like if I do it, hopefully it will inspire other athletes who're even a lot more talented than me to get it done."
