Not just is she a passionate wife and mother of five young children,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych],[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but she has just opened her first shop. And not just any shop but that most difficult of retail challenges: "A designer shoe store with attitude", which is how Margaret Fitzgerald O'Callaghan herself describes Soul,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], her new shoe emporium.
"Soul ought to be called sanctuary," she said laughing, a getaway in the mad house filled with children that's her home! Soul is surely a shoe look for the woman who takes pride in her footwear. Yes,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], you will find rock chick glittery sandals and funky mules by LK Bennett,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych],[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Magrit and Emma Hope and Sex and The City skyscraper heel courts by Pura Lopez in addition to winklepicker flat courts by Accatino, but there's also stylish yet functional suede loafers,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], brogues and mules by Robert Clergerie, Gino Pellegrini and Stephane Kelian.
"We opened the store four weeks ago and that i can't believe just how much I have learned already,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. Most importantly I have to purchase much more,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]!" Margaret told me,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. "The Stephane Kelian is unbelievable there is such a following,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]!"
So, what made this full-time Mum decide she desired to become the Queen of Heels? Well the fashion bug hit when, having worked for the Campbell Bewley group for Ten years, and after the children started arriving,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Margaret left and started organising designer knitwear sales in Dublin and Cork, selling labels for example Deirdre Fitzgerald, Lyn-Mar and Roxanna Allen (who founded the wonderful Boho shops, Rococo,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych],[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], which some clothing is featured on the page today).
"I was itching to obtain my teeth right into a project," Margaret explained. "Last summer I was visiting Cork and I went into Lucka in Douglas and that i loved their shoes so much I purchased three pairs. It was then I thought. This is it I wish to do this. I want to open a shoe emporium. Fourteen days later I had the premises in Glasthule. I got Joe Kennedy (a local architect) to design it and I started buying. You can liven up anything with a fab footwear just a week ago I wore an inexpensive outfit a high and palazzo-type trousers from Dunnes and I had these gorgeous shoes on and everybody kept admiring my outfit!"
Glasthule, where Soul relies,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], is a fast growing, individual shopping enclave and just a stone's throw from Dalkey's millionaires. There are several great clothes shops there Rococo, Miss E, the superb designer nearly-new shop,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Stage ll,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], House of Shoes and less than five minutes walk away is Susan Hunter's lingerie shop.
"The top end may be the direction we are going in," she says firmly. "I'm even more excited by next season. I keep thinking why didn't I actually do this sooner!"
Soul is in for the long haul and I believe it won't be well before we see another branch opening. There is a site and they are already taking orders for next season's styles as well as trying to order larger sizes,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. Right now they stock size 37 to 41. They can't get over the number of bridal orders they're getting.
"We've had amazing feedback on the internet site. People ringing us from Dundalk, Mayo, all over the country, ordering and paying for shoes over the telephone."
It doesn't surprise me. Although there are a handful of excellent shoe shops in Ireland, the fact is there still isn't enough choice out there. Finding unusual shoes remains the toughest sartorial challenge you face if you love your clothes. Margaret Fitzgerald O'Callaghan is well aware of this and thankfully has acted on her behalf conviction.
"When Miriam [her manager] and I are purchasing, if we're not excited through the shoe,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych],[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], not buzzed by it, we will never go for it,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," Margaret says, quite emphatically. "I want our shop to be unique, I want our mixture of shoes to be unique. It's for women with attitude,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], who are gutsy about fashion and enthusiastic about shoes.
