Roof leak worries Cabbagetown club
The boxers pray for a cold snap as they punch the heavy bag,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. They want the mercury to drop as swiftly and easily as a palooka.
Because, you see, the roof of the Cabbagetown Boxing Club has recently sprung many leaks; whenever it is warm outside, the buckets in the corners of the ring are used for leaks and drips instead of spit.
I stopped by the other night. Men skipped rope there; women shadowboxed; coaches squinted at prospects; and boy-child boxers bobbed and weaved, jabbed and countered,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], ducked and covered.
The sound in my ears was all low conversation,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], slaps of the skip rope,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and the squeaks of rubber sneakers on rubber mats.
Peter Wylie, pundit of the perfect punch - he is director of boxing operations at the Cabbagetown Youth Centre - stepped away from ringside for a moment and led me to a closet door; mops and buckets galore in there, ready to be hauled out whenever it is warm enough outside to melt the ice above.
He closed the door and pointed to the ceiling. Many tiles were missing; the remaining tiles were sagging, swollen and stained with rust-coloured water.
I know the feeling.
My bathroom, last winter.
Peter said, "We had a guy come in. He did some patching. It helped a bit." He is an optimist who keeps his guard up.
Speaking of which,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
A couple of kids were working each other over in the ring. Peter said,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], "One is Chechen,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the other is from Afghanistan. We have a number of kids from that part of the world. Tough kids."
Cabbagetown kids now.
One of the tough kids took a blow to the nose. Blood ran down. Peter called time. The kid stepped out of the ring. Peter pinched a tissue to the young man's nostrils and said, "Breathe through your mouth. Relax. You got forced air at home?"
The kid wasn't sure what that was. Peter explained forced air. The kid said yes, he had it. Peter said, "Is there a vent by your bed?" Yes. "Is it dry in the morning?" Yes. "The slightest tap can start you bleeding. Cover the vent tonight. Sleep with an extra blanket. Put a glass of water by the vent."
A little evaporation at night will keep the nostrils moist,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and less likely to react redly and wetly when introduced to fistic mayhem.
Peter turned then to his trainer, Johnny Kalbehnn,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and said,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], "He's okay now." Johnny shook his head. "That's enough." And it was.
Here's the thing. You cannot staunch a roof as easily as you can stem the flow of blood from a battered nose. A tissue costs nothing. The roof repairs will cost $43,000.
The club has raised sufficient funds to replace its heating system but there is no budget for the roof,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. Grants pour in to help train the inflow of young athletes,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]; those grants are not intended to halt the inflow of ice melt.
Two new fighters stepped into the ring. One is a prospect and the other is new to the sport,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], too old to be a prospect but stylish all the same.
Peter counselled the older fighter over the course of a long round. He said, "Counter him. If he's throwing punches,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], he's open for something. Follow with your jab. One, two,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], one. Stay with him. Move your head. That's it. Move with him. Good. Don't forget to breathe. I can see you holding your breath."
