Daniel Morcombes parents may have been 500m away from their missing son,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]
Bruce Morcombe said he and wife Denise drove past the Beerburrum State Forest,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], about 500m from the section now declared a crime scene,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], on their way home from a Christmas party in Brisbane about 3.30pm on December 7,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], 2003.
"From the primary search site, as the crow flies,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the Bruce Highway is not all that far," he said.
Police and SES volunteers began scouring a specific patch of the dense bushland about two weeks ago,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], days before charging 41-year-old Perth man Brett Peter Cowan on August 13 with Daniel's abduction and murder.
Significant breakthroughs, including the discovery of a pair of Globe sneakers and three human bones, have since set the Morcombes "back on their heels".
They now anxiously await forensic test results, which could take weeks, after each providing police with a fresh blood sample this week.
"I think logic would suggest the odds are heavily weighted that it is Daniel for sure . . . but we still have to wait for the tests to prove it conclusively,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," Mr Morcombe said.
This comes after Daniel's twin Bradley, 21, and older brother Dean,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], 23, visited the search area for the first time on Tuesday.
Rain pelted the muddy ground as the family - dressed in forensic suits - spent about 20 minutes at the farm,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], peering down into a former sand quarry where the shoes and bones were found only metres apart.
The young men were quiet as they took in the terrain and contemplated the unthinkable,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
"The boys were visibly moved by the comprehension of what may have happened,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," Mr Morcombe said.
