We're born to run. Anyone who has ever read Christopher McDougall's fabulous book of that name cannot but be inspired by the message within. This article is for those of you who might be struggling to motivate yourselves to get out there. You're not inspired and fired-up through the thought of jogging or running. It is also for those of you and also require forgotten the absolute joy of running.
I started running like a sprinter when I is at secondary school. I usually ran barefoot during races. I recall the thrill of springing from foot to foot and racing with the field. In my first school sports day running event, I ran barefoot too. I loved the sensation from the grass beneath my feet. I received some strange looks, disdainful ones even.
The 'sprinters' within the race had never run against me before and probably weren't expecting much competition. I remember them eyeing one another up though, gripped by the competitive spirit and perhaps the fear of losing. I began badly, slow out of the blocks when i always was. Fifty metres in I cruised past them and won by five metres. I recall beaming as I crossed the line. I won because I was faster. I was faster because I had been carrying less - less expectation, pressure and fear. I ran because I loved to operate, loved the feeling of speed, the freedom of it all.
In later life,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], like a marathon runner, I always held onto that sense of joy when running. Now,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], years later,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], I still love to run. I love to escape into nature, to operate in all types of weather. I enjoy discover a new trail and increase and down new hills, new challenges. I run barefoot about the sand in Bertra,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], with the short breaking waves.
My point is simply this. Running connects me. It reminds me of what it is to become alive. It jogs my memory of the gift that's my physical body and the myriad,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], magical things it can perform. It reminds me also from the saying,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], 'use it or lose it'. Every time I run, I know I am adding another day or weeks' running to my later life. I'll run until I no more can.
For you, your primary motivation for running ought to be the enjoyment you get from it. The emotions of freedom as you run the roads and trails. The pleasure of running in nature. The sense of achievement or high after completing a great session. The multiple health insurance and lifestyle benefits you're gleaning. The long life you are ensuring. A new competition personal best. We run since it connects us, empowers us and frees us.
Advertising media are for that pure enjoyment of it, the suffering you have to endure while you construct your fitness becomes secondary. You will notice that you no longer focus on the tiredness, the out-of-breath feeling,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the sense of how hard it's to start with. Run and pay attention to your body. Maybe the cramp you are feeling is the body shouting 'Yes, much more of this, this is what I've been attempting to let you know!'
Don't wait another minute to experience the miracle of the body. It is truly a gift from God. Experience it. So, lace up those shoes and go. If you cannot run, then cycle, swim - move!
Ultimately the body is really a temple. Your decision would be to worship it or desecrate it.
